The problems with Cal Fire.

Pros

- Ability to transfer between units and experience work in many areas of the state.
- Cal Fire is truly an "all risk" agency.
- Opportunity to travel all over the state during fire season.

Cons

- Low pay / benefits compared to other areas of the fire service.
- Opportunities for career advancement are limited
- The best employees usually leave.
- Nepotism is a big problem.
- Very difficult to eliminate low performers.
-Bad, lazy, incompetent co-workers will never be fired.

Advice to Management

Cal Fire has access to a large talent pool but has not found a way (or the will) to make use of it. A more rigorous hiring process and increased standards for current employees would improve morale, retention, and performance.

Add to this a crooked incompetent Governor that is an idiot as in underestimating the fire danger or other life and safety problems in this state. A good example is the problems with the Oroville Dam which has still not had it's spillway repair completed and it won't be completed until next year at this time if it survives this winter.

Jerry Brown is a public safety hazard!

Nepotism is usually only a problem in highly paid industries.

Are you saying that people are trapping their friends & relatives into low paying jobs?

Nope. You can't run a successful department when this is going on:  (The best employees usually leave.)

Doesn't help that California has to use prisoners to fight fires. Over 25% of their forest firefighters are slave labour.

I'd volunteer to leave my prison cell too, even if it was for $2/day. What's that got to do with what I said? Where are the professionals?

Why pay a professional when you've got an expendable volunteer force you can pay pennies to do dangerous work, eh?

$2/day. That's less than the cost of feeding a slave.

Southern slaves in America were paid "overtime" if they worked on Sunday.

Open a history book son. Or did it burn down in a fire because you're using slaves as firefighters?

Southern slaves volunteered to be slaves.
