China will slide right in there while Putin is distracted by Ukraine

Putin himself admitted at a press conference following a meeting with Xi that China had “concerns” about his war in Ukraine. So did India.

But there is one more elephant in the room: Siberia, a region bigger and richer than any place on Earth, with resources that underpin Putin’s economy. It is Asian, not European, and one day will mostly fall into China’s hands. Xi knows this and needn’t lift a finger to speed along this outcome. To some, a Chinese takeover of Siberia may seem preposterous. But Putin’s flailing war against the West increases the odds that the Russian Federation itself may atomize.

Putin may eventually be removed, freeing Russia from a dictatorship but also liberating revolutionary and secessionist movements across the vast Federation. Moscow’s militarized center, with a military that’s been humiliated, will not hold. There are dozens of active secessionist movements across Russia: Chechnya, Tatarstan, Kaliningrad, Sakha Republic and others in Siberia.

In 1860, the czar grabbed Chinese territory in the Far East, annexing 350,000 square miles of Manchurian China (roughly the size of Nigeria) with its verdant climate and strategic Pacific coastline, including Vladivostok on the Sea of Japan. It did so by capitalizing on a series of unjust treaties that became known as the Amur Annexation, which was foisted on the Qing Dynasty by the West to settle the hideous Opium Wars. (These treaties also handed over Hong Kong to the British.) They are still resented by China today.

I've said all along that Putin's biggest mistake was showing China just how weak his military is. The U.S. doesn't want anything to do with Russia but China can now just annex those oil fields.

Putin’s empire in Central Asia is crumbling as Russia fails to keep the peace for its oldest, closest allies

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine goes into reverse, another crisis for the Kremlin is developing in the former Soviet possessions of central and western Asia.

Five of the six full members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), Russia’s analogue to Nato that covers the region, are in varying states of war.

Azerbaijan – a non-member – has launched an offensive against Armenia and continues to occupy Armenian territory with a shaky ceasefire in place. Around 100 soldiers have died in fighting between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

But when Armenia invoked the CSTO’s mutual defence pact following the Azeri offensive, Russia did not come to its aid. Neither has Moscow intervened in the conflict between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, having previously played a peacekeeping role in the disputed border region.

Russia’s abdication of its role as security guarantor, following its invasion of Ukraine, has triggered reactions across the region. Protesters in Armenia have called for the government to exit the CSTO. Political leaders have strayed from traditional support for Russia in international forums.

Tigran Khzmalyan, leader of Armenia’s European Party, says that it was agreed in principle at a parliamentary meeting on September 20 that the country should leave both the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). “The Prime Minister (Nikol Pashinyan) said he had never seen such anti-Russia feelings in Armenia,” says Khzmalyan.

If Russia’s power diminishes in the region, other players could be ready to fill the vacuum. China is already outspending Russia in central Asia with scope to increase its influence.

It would complete the parallel with Putin's fellow bungler Hitler.  Hitler wanted to enlarge Germany, but ended up losing a big chunk of Germany's own eastern territory to Poland.
