MAKE TUITION FREE AT PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.

This is not a radical idea. Last year, Germany eliminated tuition because they believed that charging students $1,300 per year was discouraging Germans from going to college. Next year, Chile will do the same. Finland, Norway, Sweden and many other countries around the world also offer free college to all of their citizens. If other countries can take this action, so can the United States of America. In fact, it’s what many of our colleges and universities used to do. The University of California system offered free tuition at its schools until the 1980s. In 1965, average tuition at a four-year public university was just $243 and many of the best colleges – including the City University of New York – did not charge any tuition at all. The Sanders plan would make tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout the country.

So Bernie Sanders wants to give us free health care and free tuition? Can you say B-A-N-K-R-U-P-T-C-Y?

We almost went bankrupt bailing out the banks in 2008 without free healthcare and free tuition but with federal bailouts for speculators.

If you want to study something useful like engineering, computer science or medicine and you have high enough grades and test scores to get into a competitive program, that should be free. Want to go to trade school and become a mechanic or a plumber and you have the aptitude for it, no charge for that.

Have crappy grades in high school and want a degree in Gender Studies. Go to a private school and pay for it yourself. Put it on your credit card if your bank is stupid enough to let you, but no government subsidized loans at all. No waterparks or fancy dorms at the Universities either. Use your own money to party.

More subsidy? You don't think parental spending and student barrowing will decrease if cost is zero?

That's the problem with you Socialists... the cost can't be zero. The government will funnel even more money at the issue, and that will only increase the costs. The more easily money flows into an event, the more that event will end up costing, since the people owning the event and arranging the event are always greedy and will take more money if they can get it from their demands.

So if Sanders made "college free" then that would only mean the colleges and universities would feed off of a stream of public money which would double the 'costs' per student.

You only believe that's good since poor people won't 'see' those costs. But every taxpayer will. In spades.

And here's another thing: College still won't be 'free'. The gas to get to college won't be free. The books won't be free. The meals and housing won't be free.

Some extra fees will always be laid directly upon the student. For example, when I went to college, I went while in the National Guard, hence I got a "tuition wavier" for attending a state university. Sounds great, right? Except by the time I was using that waiver, the tuition for each semester was $X and the set of fees applied on each semester were close to $X. In other words, the university doubled the cost of attending university via "fees", probably to make up for all the people who had tuition waivers, and in fact for all the people whose tuition was paid so easily by other people.

Greed will always rule. This is a Human truth. Hence making college 'free' will only drive up costs beyond what's already being done. It will SHIFT costs, true, but costs will still RISE.

That would effectively make college worthless.

No, it would make a high school diploma or GED worthless. Employers will progressively expect employees across the scale to have a college degree. College will just become a 4-yr extension of high school, hence the new minimum requirement to have a job in the United States.

You don't seem to understand that the main push for "free college" is from the Liberals who tend to get the useless socialist degrees. Your plan can't work. In fact, trade schools will undoubtedly be EXCLUDED from the "free college" plan.

So it will work if trade schools are included.

Still, it's preferable to have an educated population, instead of a bunch of whiny, bitter baggers living in the past.

Education obviously has failed you. I don't believe we need more educated scum like yourself , funded by people who actually produce something of value for Americans.

I graduated from University of Chicago.  How about you?

UCSD, BC for grad school, Northeastern for a second degree and now I'm pondering my options on the second round of grad school.

So a bunch of shit schools.  Got it.

And the epitomy of that education is posting here. Worthless.

. said: You can have free education or you can have 20 of those new subs that each have 40 nuclear warheads capable of killing 400MM chinese.

You idiots would rather have the subs than the education, even though we cannot win a single war against shit countries like Iraq and Syria.

You people should get out more.  The rest of the world has good cheap health care and nearly free education.  But......we're number 1.  Look at our shiny toys of death.

...created by highly educated people. I agree our war economy sucks.
