Watching movies on a laptop is annoying.  I'd rather sit on my living room couch, put my feet up on the coffee table, watch the movie on a bigger HDTV screen, and start/pause/control volume with a 2.4ghz wireless keyboard & mouse.

For about 95% of people though, even a Chromebook is overkill.

Yup, all the time. Have an HTPC like others here for movies on the big screen, lappy's if I need to be mobile but I prefer to be sitting at my huge desk with 3 monitors. My phone is for talking on and the occasional e-mail or text. If you do any more on your phone, you must be 9.

Here, I disagree.  Google maps with GPS is useful.  If I'm waiting in line or waiting for restaurant food, I like to read news articles.  And a smartphone is also good for listening to MP3s music & podcasts.
