And author admits to a lot of guesswork and even if he is correct, it just proves a Putman arrived in 1649...

That doesn't answer the question stupid.... Why did they (edit your great-grandmother) change it from Putman to Putnam and I erred, it was between 1920 and 1930 this happened.

Census takers weren't always accurate (or even sober) when they wrote down names.

Fess up now Akins, they were divorced at some time weren't they??

Hey, it's okay, not your fault... Just admit it, and your great-grandmother changed the last name from Putman to Putnam to disassociate herself from him.
