Happy Labor Day James!

Not that you would ever know what labor is.

No one who has been as adept at avoiding it his entire life could be ignorant of labor.

On the contrary, James has electrical sensors in his kneegro fro that alert him to the proximity of labor from great distances thus allowing him to escape it.

During my daily walks around West Ocean View, I pick up trash for recycling at the Willoughby Boat Ramp as part of the Willoughby Civic League's effort to make our neighborhood cleaner and safer. Lately, I’m finding broken glass in the parking lot. I would clean it up myself, but having previously had glass removed from my hand, I am hesitant to risk such an endeavor.

When I call Norfolk Cares and report the occurrence, I am met with a scourge of bureaucracy and flippancy. They seem to lose track of such maintenance reports. No one else in city government that hangs out at the boat ramp during their working hours seems to want to report the issue, each time claiming it’s not their problem. I'm sorry, you are the city of Norfolk, and as a taxpayer-funded employee, it is your problem.

Even worse was reporting this situation to Norfolk Mayor Kenny Alexander's office. The first reaction was to have the Norfolk Police Department call me, which was unnecessary and illogical. Then they told me someone else would call. The person never has. I figure he's about as much help in owning the issue as those who park at the boat ramp to goof off on city work time.
