The real reason why they're called "self-help" books is because the authors want to help themselves to the contents of your wallets. Self-help books optimistically and disingenuously present the exceptional as being typical; for example, the self-helpers at Amway will tell you that anyone can become a "Double Diamond" and live a luxurious life by getting a big downline to sell their products, but only 1 percent every reach that level.

Self-help gurus like Stephen Covey think they can solve all the problems of the universe by adopting seven effective habits.

Reddit's got an entire subforum devoted to discussion of MLMs like Amway. Read it sometime if you want a real education on how MLMs work.

Utah County is the affinity fraud capital of the United States. Coincidentally, a gaggle of MLMs make their headquarters there.

A Canadian self-help guru. He actually has some integrity; he's publicly criticized political correctness in the past.
