Topic: What happens if I don't pay my medical bill?

I had to go to the ER. Just received my bill. $800 physician's bill & $850 ER bill. They made me pay $400 before I could leave the ER so my ER bill is now $450.

Still I owe $800 plus $450 and they're already threatening to send my bill to the collection agency.

They said they can offer me a 15% discount on the physician's bill if I pay promptly in full which brings that down to $680. So if I pay in full, I have to pay $680 + $450. They absolutely refuse to give me any more discounts

What happens if I let it go to collections? I'm guessing it will ruin my credit score & credit report but is that such a big deal? I just have to wait 7 years, right?

This is not a troll. Oh and if you haven't already figured it out, I don't have insurance.

Nothing will happen. My sister used to routinely not pay her medical bills and it didn't even have much of an effect on her credit rating.

Are you sure?

I'm sure it shows up on the credit report and that's not good. Whether I'm applying for jobs, renting an apartment, buying a home, applying for credit cards, applying for loans etc. it will show up.

This worries me a lot.

Not paying your bills is very bad news. Try to get a loan from family or friends to pay off this bill.

Unpaid medical bills is not looked at as negatively as other unpaid debt.

Sounds like a troll. How could they make you pay $400 before you could leave the ER? They can't hold you captive. That would be kidnapping. There is absolutely no way they could have held you hostage unless you paid $400.

Let me clarify, they didn't force me to pay. They just said "you need to pay this before you leave". Like a gullible idiot, I said "okay" and handed my credit card.

I should have said no. I should have said I can't pay. They would have let me go. They have to provide treatment regardless of whether the person can pay.

I'm just not used to being irresponsible. If I go to a restaurant, I pay my bill. If I charge something to my credit card, then I make sure to pay off my credit card in full.

Nope I don't because I have too much money in my bank account. Also I'm too old and I'm only supporting myself. I already tried.
