Consistently, for 2000 years, lot's of people have exercised faith in and proclaimed the lordship of this Jesus character though, according to mr snicker, NOTHING HAPPENED.

It is an intellectual hook that people can feel smug about -- the bible obviously isn't literally true so i am smarter than religious people.
Of course it is a strawman they are defeating; only cletii in the southern us take the bible as literal truth and most of them probably wouldn't if pressed. A lot of very intelligent people indeed were also religious, Isaac Newton of course but all Jesuits begin their novitiate only after a secular PhD usually in the hard sciences.
So atheism is usually just unfounded arrogance. Not always but 99% of the time.
Where does what is literal and what isn't end? Where is the line? Noah didn't really sail a ship with two of every animal on board, but Jesus really was born of a virgin, died and came back to life.

I find just the opposite. I see most atheists I know have studied and really asked the question if there is a god or not. Most xians I know have never really questioned it.
Hey, I'm an agnostic and I resent that! Agnostics are the least ass-holey people because by definition THEY HAVE NO FAITH WHATSOEVER. Atheists have faith that god or gods don't exist; Religious people have faith that they do. As faithless people, agnostics have nothing to be strident or argumentative about. They simply say, like I do, maybe there is a god or gods and maybe there isn't; there simple fact is there's simply no way for we mere humans to know one way or the other.
That is exactly what the Catholic church says about birth control and abortion. Very seldom does a catholic ever listen. Human beings are funny that way.
But again your atheist simplicity shows -- you have no subtlety. Nobody "throws out" parts of the bible -- except of course Jews throwing out the New Testament. Otherwise most people see it as an ancient foundational document from varied sources with great spiritual and historical richness and easily the most important work of literature in western european culture. Which of course it is.
