It's the most insecure profession, period. You're susceptible to outsourcing, your skills must be constantly updated, you are up against ageism, you're never going to meet women because you're a black sheep with a career that has no prestige, and you're basically spending your days as an antisocial hero who will never be acknowledged for what you do.
Fuck that. Not to mention declining wages as companies continue to hire 3rd world labor. It's a commodity profession now, you don't want to be in it.

Look, if you're going to be a programmer, you have relatively few options for employement:
1) superstar - make it big with big company, that's probably not most of you, or you'd be cashing out at facebook right now.
2) roll your own - make some awesome software, sell it, retire. most of you are too lazy, and lack the business knowledge to pull this off.
3) military industrial complex - get a top secret security clearance, write your own ticket, never be unemployed again ( or until the US govt goes belly up).
I can vouch for this. I learned to program by reading free online tutorials. I only buy books that are universally considered to be the definitive text on a subject.
People ask me why I'm "reinventing the wheel" when I write something for which several solutions already exist. I tell them it's because I want to learn how they did it.
The code I was working on when I was unemployed helped me get my current job.
Well, ok. I'm sure that could get you a beginning programming job. I guess it's been too long since I was starting out.
You should be able to land a senior development job by creatively articulating the depth of your experience. Hell, it works for the dots. Management doesn't give a shit.

Yup all programmers I know are only making 6 figures .
You seem to be both uneducated and angry. Yes, experience is the best teacher. But, the fact is professional software companies primarily hire programmers with a CS background.
When they left work, they didnt' immediately park in front of their home computer learning the latest shit.
After dealing with the morons, politicians, psychopaths, ass kissers, backstabbers, and mental defectives on a daily basis at my last IT job, there's no way I'm going to park in front of the computer to learn the latest shit.
I used to go home at night & would find myself unable to operate the TV remote. I'm sure others have been in similar circumstances.
