Number one career killer for programmers.

Shut the fuck up.

You know what though?

Sticking your dick in the grinder by picking some obscure Linux solution will get your ass canned tout de suite. The minute anything goes wrong you own the FAIL. Even if it works better 99% of the time.

There's a reason why the saying back in the day "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" still holds.

How else do you think Larry Ellison is buying Hawaiian islands?

OSS is a proven model and has too many success stories to argue. Your original assertion that OSS is bad for a career in programming is simply wrong.

That doesn't mean there aren't legions of people stupid enough to buy Oracle.

I'm pretty sure the people who have posted nothing but ignorance and shouted "Arse is here!" never were in school.

REMINDER: YELLING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE JOBS AND HATING THEM FOR BETTERING THEMSELVES WHILE PICKING THROUGH GARBAGE FOR LUNCH IS HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE

Not in Silicon Valley. Not the guys actually developing the applications you use every day.

So many excuses for failure in this thread. Shut the fuck up, failures.

 We here at KNOA software are the experts in cloud computing. Now we invent cloud squared which is too complicated for you to even understand. Cloud computing is not a game to be played by children like you.

1st, you find *the* book for the language. There is always one. It does not change except for edition. read that book and learn it well.

2nd, you hit the web and work tutorials and pick up jargon and trends.

3rd, you write 3 or 4 things you already know how to write in the languages you've been using.

assuming you are not completely socially inept using this methodology will let you walk into 99% of the jobs out there.

I can vouch for this. I learned to program by reading free online tutorials. I only buy books that are universally considered to be the definitive text on a subject.

People ask me why I'm "reinventing the wheel" when I write something for which several solutions already exist. I tell them it's because I want to learn how they did it.

The code I was working on when I was unemployed helped me get my current job.

This. Reading a thousand books on the wheel will never replace making one yourself.

I made sure to know every web CMS out there, means you can basically write your ticket on all the work out there.

I am learning Wordpress just for that reason.

Much as the idea fills me with disgust.

If you're a rock star in big tech you move up the old fashioned way. If you're just a guy who's not going to make it into the executive ranks then keeping your technical skills sharp will make you far more employable than people who've gone the mgmt. route.

I am the O/P on this thread.

Yes, you are correct. The problem is working same old, same old, is a skill destroyer.

Examples: Places that still use Perl 4 style code, or Python 1.5.2, or, god help us all, there are still DOS shops around.

Agreed. So what's the next thing you're going to work on learning on your own?

Web Frameworks. As others have said, this lowest common deonominator stuff helps to ensure continued employment.

Fuck programming. Who the FUCK would want that career. If you're a programmer, you better be making iphone apps or something, because it's a dead end career.
.

I have a great idea -- instead of contemplating for a moment that you might not very competent at your job, and are thus being pushed out as your age makes you even less competent, how about you whine and blame the world on a bbs?
