Basically laid it out to the VP who knows I'm swamped. Told her working at home really isn't working, the phones in the office go unanswered, emails get dealys, can't stop by to ask questions, customers/other people figure out who actually is in the office all the time and those people end up doing the bulk of the work and since they are around, all the urgent work gets dumped on them too.
Then I laid it out - these people are out of the office a min of 20% of the time, add in holidays, vacation and sick days they are not really contributing. Might as well lay them off.
She announced the cancelation at the town hall today.
That was the requirement in the first place. Some people were working, but you can't answer your phone or be available for random meetings. That is part of the job.
The reality is in an operations envrionment - you need to be in the office. If you are writing documents or doing bullshit work, you can get away with the home stuff.
Telecommuting is for the elite. There are cases in which it's used for the real working pukes, but in those cases, it's kept because the previous infrastructure (basically, the office itself) is obliterated and there's no budgeted means of returning to it.

So using your logic, all companies should just have one location. Otherwise, what with remote offices, time zones and such, you can't manage by walking around.
"I don't care if it's 3.00 AM where you are! We need to have a random meeting to discuss switching from the Bostich to the Swingline stapler!"

Remember, if you can telecommute to your job, then so can Sanjay from Bangalore, and Sanjay's a lot fucking cheaper than you are.
