Can you give me the names of some illnesses (not no servere of course) that would require medicine I can buy off the shelf that I can't drink alcohol with.
Its just an excuse to say to people that I can't drink because I'm taking such and such medicine. I was thinking of saying I have heartburn or something like that. Would that fool a very nosy brother-in-law?
You have no idea about drinking and eating in Europe do you? Its more complex than that. Drinking is part of life here, an open bottle of wine is expected when people drop in to visit. Cold beer in the fridge at all times.
The argument about alcohol not affecting antibiotics isn't true. Say you're taking Metronidazole, that cannot be mixed with alcohol, it will make you severaly sick and it's one that could be prescribed for toothache.

Thanks! Now to google what would that be called locally???

Still best to be open about it. If you don't want to discuss it then tell them so.

What a crock.
When people 'drop in' to visit, they'd normally bring a bottle themselves.
If it's prearranged, the host would provide some booze, but everybody would still bring a bottle.
That's general. Europe is dozens of countries, there are twice as many different traditions as there are countries.
I wouldn't doubt the booze flows, but it'd be unusual for a guest to turn up expecting to drink, and not bring something with him - in most of Europe anyway.

I give up alcohol for one month every year. When people ask, I tell them exactly that. It actually feels pretty good and by the end of the month I usually am not all that interested in drinking anymore.
So if I was in your shoes, I'd just tell people I'm having an alcohol-free month. And then when the month is up tell them you liked the results so much you are going for another, and another, etc. That's actually a very positive spin, and sounds better than, "Oh, I had to give it up because I'm a fucking lush;" and a hell of a lot better than, "Oh, I have some chronic disease for which I need medication."
