Can you give me the names of some illnesses (not no servere of course) that would require medicine I can buy off the shelf that I can't drink alcohol with.

Its just an excuse to say to people that I can't drink because I'm taking such and such medicine. I was thinking of saying I have heartburn or something like that. Would that fool a very nosy brother-in-law?

WHY MAKE UP LAME EXCUSES, JEW?

IF SOMEONE ASKS YOU WHY YOU DON'T WANT TO GO OUT FOR A DRINK JUST RESPOND "BECAUSE I DON'T FEEL LIKE IT". :discussionclosed:

You have no idea about drinking and eating in Europe do you? Its more complex than that. Drinking is part of life here, an open bottle of wine is expected when people drop in to visit. Cold beer in the fridge at all times.

Go out and drink diet soda. If anyone asks why, tell them your doctor put you on a diet.

No other suggestions on illnesses?

Ever seen a fat alcoholic?

how about pedophilia?

ie the alcohol will release your inner/hidden inhibitions and possibly end up in a faux pas

Tooth infection, you're taking antibiotics.

The argument about alcohol not affecting antibiotics isn't true. Say you're taking Metronidazole, that cannot be mixed with alcohol, it will make you severaly sick and it's one that could be prescribed for toothache.

Thin people go on diets too, dumb shit. Ever hear of high cholesterol or diabetes? Early onset diabetes is a good excuse to not drink alcohol.

You need something more vague or people will wonder why you still have a tooth infection in 3 months from now...

Still best to be open about it. If you don't want to discuss it then tell them so.

Lying isn't good.

What a crock.

When people 'drop in' to visit, they'd normally bring a bottle themselves.

If it's prearranged, the host would provide some booze, but everybody would still bring a bottle.

That's general. Europe is dozens of countries, there are twice as many different traditions as there are countries.

Drop in, in the village I live is continous and very informal. Booze flows within 5 mins of arriving.

Maybe in Russia, or some other Eastern European craphole where there's nothing better to do than drink yourself to death in your late 30's.

I wouldn't doubt the booze flows, but it'd be unusual for a guest to turn up expecting to drink, and not bring something with him - in most of Europe anyway.

But there are always exceptions.

I give up alcohol for one month every year. When people ask, I tell them exactly that. It actually feels pretty good and by the end of the month I usually am not all that interested in drinking anymore.

So if I was in your shoes, I'd just tell people I'm having an alcohol-free month. And then when the month is up tell them you liked the results so much you are going for another, and another, etc. That's actually a very positive spin, and sounds better than, "Oh, I had to give it up because I'm a fucking lush;" and a hell of a lot better than, "Oh, I have some chronic disease for which I need medication."
