My dad was a master carpenter, he made I guess about 500 bucks a week. I think he was doing work for the mob also and that would explain a lot of late night calls.

I was pulling $4.5K

. said:That's crazy at 6450 a year with a new car costing 3k, you are pulling in over double of what that car cost. Now a days, what's average salary 40-45k? a new car costs almost that, that's bullshit. This is why people can't afford anything, they priced shit way too much, right up to what people make for a whole year. Greedy bastards.

This is partly the consumer's fault. They want all kinds of fancy shit on their wheels, but when this bling needs repair or replacement, they  like babies.

Things are priced higher because of idiot motherfuckers who want to live on credit and cannot pay their bills. Now *I* am expected to live like that if I want anything nice.

This rapture can't come fast enough.

So buy an older car and maintain it yourself. It's not that difficult to do.

Not asking for strictly professional salaries, just a round about figure and yea I know its a stretch but was just curious if anyone could give close enough data.

1965 - minimum wage $1.75/hour

Union guys would be getting $3 to $5

Professionals might be making $15K to $25K.

How much do you think this old car will cost if it is in good working condition?

i know you asked about the 60's but in case anyone wanted to know, i was looking at going to college in the mid-70's. i asked the engineering professor how much engineers made per year and he said around $13,000/yr. this was in the midwest.

i told my dad that and he said that was more than what he made and he worked for a pharmaceutical company. but our house was bought for $25,000 so i'm guessing the house payment was a little over $200/mo. with a lot of kids in the family we did all right but we didn't have a ton of money.

that's one of the difference between boomers and the generations that follow. we didn't have much and now the kids have everything they want. if we wanted recreation we paid for bowling at the bowling alley or played pinball and video games out of our own money which was about $5/wk.

Well, the last car I bought new was in '88 for $17,000. It was still simple enough for me to work on. I've changed the engine and trans twice.
Kept the body and interior in good shape.

Bullshit, things were invented for the sole purpose of jacking a xars price up and making the consumer think it was "value added" for example if you life in an area that snows I can tack an "undercoating" price of a few grand, you know how well that protects the car... Bullshit it eats away at the undercarriage and that was proven anyone who was smart never got that BS.

All these new shit like built in gps no body wanted , it came the fuck out of nowhere and they jammed it into cars andpassed the cost on to you, OnStar, fuckin MS Sync :lmao: so now my car can blue screen AND I'm paying extra for it. What a load of crap.

All I want is a reliable car with minimal distractions, radio, nice seats and easy to work on. thats fuckng it, but I can't buy one like that because it would only cost about 18k and that's too LOW to sell :boring: Fuck these corporations.

The $20K is sticker price. You know you're supposed to negotiate it lower, right?

From 20k, how low can you negotiate it? To 19k? Big whoop! I tried that at a BMW dealership back in 2000 and the guy wouldn't budge. I ended up not buying from him.

None of the cars posted sticker prices are anywhere near what you will find on a dealers lot and if you order one it gets worse, you all know this to be true stop dickin around.

Federal government pay scale from 1949 - 1993 can be found here. Probably want to look at a grade 14 or 15.

Well clearly, that proves it's impossible to negotiate a lower price on a new car. In fact, I'm quite sure it never happens.

In a similar manner society is really being screwed with 3 sardines in a can instead of 5 and 80 cents for a candy bar less than half the size it was in mid 1980s when it cost 25 cents!

Depreciation
taxes and fees
Financing.

Guess you missed those. Not to mention you will NEVER find a camry or any other car for what it shows on-line or in an add. Go down to a dealer and you will see, the only ones they stock are the ones that are 6-8k more expensive to start.
