people are more complex than just "he is a brilliant physicist therefore everything he says must be right." it is easy to see that a person in his condition couldn't believe in an all-powerful god that allowed him to be confined to the prison that is his body. there could be his life experiences that sway him toward his belief just like religious people may be wrongly swayed to believe in a false god.
