The AdBrite thing seemed like a good idea at the time and it turned into a waste of years of his life. He had a hot property and walked away from it.

Despite what the haterz say, what made FC popular was that Pud's postings were actually pretty funny most of the time.
The dotcom bust faded, of course, but as the other dot suggests he probably could have expanded into coverage of other aspects of the economy (which he in fact started to do) or high tech. He was Valleywag and Techcrunch long before those two ever appeared.
But I also agree with the dot who said Adbrite sounded like a better idea at the time. After all, Google was getting millions for the same idea.
