We do not even consider DC suburbs in VA to be part of the south, the south ends in Richmond city limits to the north.
DC is the north.
There are a lot of southerners who are very serious about the southern culture.
And Maryland is NOT part of it.
To many many southerners the civil war never ended.

In the south, the Civil war is very much still a issue. In Atlanta they have Stone Mt with a GIANT sculpture of Gen Lee , Jefferson Davis (president of the CSA) on a mountain where they play Elvis tunes to fireworks every night of the week.
Southerners very much are are aware of the war to this day and very much resent it as we still feel we had a right under the US constitution to separate and form our own nation, and we were invaded from the north by Lincoln.
You may think this is a joke if you live in the North, but in the South it is very much a real issue.
The South is the only part of America where we were invaded by a foreign army ( the Federalist Army of the North) and completely conquered by all means necessary, like burning major cities to the ground
The North attacked the South, the South had a consititional RIGHT to spearate from the Federal Union at anytime, this was a right protected by the US Consittution.
Lincoln broke with the constitution when he invaded the CSA (Confederate States of America).
The war was NOT about slavery. It was about the souths right to create their own nation.

too most true born and bred southerners they remember the disastor of the civil war where the Northern troops came in and burned American Cities to the ground, they were not rebuilt like we did with Germany and Japan.
Sherman is considered a war criminal to most true southerners, and he was.
