They have to answer to the predominantly liberal middle-class who think any and all anti-immigration sentiment is racist. The media is also very liberal, including the BBC, and won't give anti-immgration sentiment a fair hearing. Chances are the average politicians will never interact with another human being who doesn't think anti-immigration = racist.

Are you retarded? The Cons have basically halted all non-EU immigration.

The trouble their having is that they've set this ridiculous "tens of thousands net migration" target. It's ridiculous because net migration remains high because British citizens are returning from abroad to live in the UK.
