Actually that wasn't a terrible plot idea, in ID4 they flat out showed that we were NO fuckin match for the aliens, we couldn't overcome their tech, end of story. So using something like a virus (hint war of the worlds tried this already but now we do it digitaly) was the only way and realistically *might* work, yes they have better tech than us but the POINT is that something so small like a bacteria would go unnoticed to galactic spanning conquerors, hence the Trojan horse effect.
