No, what do I care what other people think? Especially when they're wrong.

Tipping (or not) ought to be based on what the locals do.

It's not the local custom to do that.

In America the custom is 100% of customers leave a tip, it's expected... so stiffing the waiter wouldn't be acceptable.

20% of customers leave a tip because the service they enjoyed was amongst the top 20% of restaurant experiences in their lives, not because of the stock market last week.

"Though regularly discussed, argued and debated, the truth is you dont need to tip in Italy. Really. Let me repeat that: you dont need to tip in Italy. Of course most workers will not scoff or refuse a tip (though a few will), but its not necessary, and I think its a bad precedence to set for foreigners to tip in Italy for simple things like a coffee, taxi rides, or dinner in a pizzeria. Many Italians I know will only leave a tip for very exceptional service (think: anniversary dinner in a Michelin-starred restaurant) or will leave the change when paying cash because its easier not to wait for the waiter to make change (think: leaving a 100-euro banknote on a 99-euro bill), but its a choice of convenience rather than rewarding service. In Rome, waiters / taxi drivers are getting spoiled with foreigners leaving tips and are now expecting them. But you dont need to tip in Italy. Youre probably already paying a supplement through the coperto (cover charge) or servizio (service charge) on your restaurant bill."

Why? It's not fitting with the local custom.

If one had lost $20 billion last week, could he then stiff an American waiter?

Maybe you don't eat in reasonable restaurants?

But not in Italy.

Tipping is hardly customary in Italy.

"In Italy you tip if you really like the place, the food and the service; if the waiter was very friendly for example. In US a waiter has a small salary, but just because he will have a lot of tips: tipping is necessary; in Italy no, the salary is good and the tip is something exceptional, so a guest can tip or not and normally only the 10/20 percent of guests tip. Giving a tip to the waiter or leaving it on the table it is up to you."

Sounds like some tourist rip-off place is just butthurt.

The "gift of life" is a blood or organ donation. Why not do that instead and help several people in more dire circumstances?

Since 1. the honor guard are active duty military who would be paid regardless of what they were doing.

2. the personnel involved are only incurring an opportunity cost. You could argue that this could be spent on some other, more worthy, military purpose like shining boors, buckles or mopping an already clean floor, but I'm not buying it.

3. The cost could be more than offset by setting up a tip jar.

Again, they could cut 10 (highly ranked) soldiers from the payroll so there is a cost.

You do nothing with your life. NOTHING

All you do is bitch and whine.

At least I don't do so at the taxpayers' expense.

What could be more worthless than standing around in prissy outfits "standing guard" over some box of bones?

Someone on this thread alrady pointed out that this is NOT where you start cutting.

These guys are already in the Army. They are getting paid whether they do Tomb Guard or not. You don't seem to understand.

To maintain round-the-clock coverage they probably need 8-10 soldiers to cover for sick days, training, vacations, etc.

Cutting 8-10 soldiers from the armed forces sounds like a worthwhile savings to me.
