Businesses are trying to manage without hiring because of the high cost of hiring and retaining workers.
This way at least the people will have a chance to get a new skill and an opportunity to work their way into a permanent job.
Extending benefits is a really bad idea. After reality sets in, most people who get laid off go through the following mental process:
Stage 1: It's sort of like time off. Visit family, catch up on some projects, have a garage sale, in between submitting applications.
Stage 2: Time to get serious, and look for a job just like the one I have.
Stage 3: Opps. No jobs like I had are around here. Let me look for something related, or look in another geographic area.
Stage 4: Hmmm. No luck. We'll, I'll apply at places that seem to be decent, but no place where I don't WANT to work.
Stage 5: Yikes....benefits are running out. I better get something...even bagging groceries or delivering pizzas ... that will put groceries on the table.
When you extend benefits, you delay that stage 5 -- which is crucial in getting about 30% off of unemployment, and also bringing down spending and hastening the overall recovery.
Now, with WORKFARE, you give people a shitty job right off the bat, so the motivation to find something / ANYTHING is much stronger, earlier in the process. If you are digging ditches or filling in potholes, any job in a climate-controled environment starts to look pretty good.
Obama knows that, and is avoiding this because if the workers are angry, they will vote for someone who actually wants them to get ahead in life.
Lazy communists know that, and want Obama or his kind in power because they get more freebies.
Gingrich's plan would accomplish what you just outlined.
Receiving unemployment benefits require you to look for work. Not so much for other programs.
But your real assumption is that there's work to be had for anyone looking, and that's not the case. We've got an economy that's shedding jobs like crazy, and you're not getting rid of unemployment benefts isn't going to change that.
I agree with that. However 99 weeks of benefits is stupid.
So create jobs here. Start drilling, start tariffs on imports and tax corporations 0%.
Why? It's an insurance that's paid by your employer or directly if you work on a 1099.
If there really is a problem, it's that Congress keeps extending the benefits without changing the tax for it. I guess it's easier to do that than deal with the trade and immigration policies they've created that are costing us millions of jobs.
When unemployment benefits take away the incentive to look for work, it is a failed system.
No book, but he suggests that people on unemployment be forced to work for businesses while getting unemployment checks, so businesses can get free labor in exchange for training the losers, and eventually hire them.
Oh goody. Let's give business another reason to fire people and replace them with free labor.
I say either that or do away with unemployment benefits.
He has made good points on dealing with the chronic unemployed.
Which book?

Can't say that I've heard anything from Gingrich that really says what he'll do as president. Every answer seems to be "in my book xxx, I describe a 10 point program...". I really have no desire to send him money to find out what he's actually campaigning on.

Hmmm. So when I connect to the wifi internet after entering my password, I see the little bars. This would suggest I'm connected, right? It doesn't work though, nor does it if I'm using the ethernet -- again, getting bars.
Grrrrr. Anyway, thanks guys, I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong by missing a step.
Is there a way to get google voice to connect via the 3G network? if I look it up via blackberry app world, it says my wireless device isn't connected or something. I'm assuming my phone's browser just uses 3G, then (which is probably super expensive...!)
I'll try giving it a rest and retesting later, I guess
Your device is not connected to the wireless, because your router is down, dumb girl.
Are you sure your ethernet or wifi adapters are on? Could be a switch or keyboard combination to toggle them off and on.
Are you sure your ethernet cable is good? They can go bad esp if it is attached and unattached a lot.
Try your most recent restore point.
If that doesn't work,
Go to control panel, system, devices, find the ethernet and wifi adapter listings and highlight each and remove them. Then reboot and the machine should reinstall them.
