Based on what I've read about Zimmerman,, and read about the kid, I think an over-eager self-appointed Neighborhood Watch commander got a little too ambitious, tried to stalk a kid for a crime that had not even been established, and wanted to prove himself to local law enforcement so he could complete his goal of becoming a cop. Called the cop 46 times in 8 years to report various things, was enrolled in law enforcement classes in some community college until this incident occurred, when he was kicked out for "safety reasons".
Black kid in a hoodie walkng home talking to his girlfriend. Paranoid, bat-shit crazy wanna be cop, cop wanna be confronts kid, kid freaks out and either tried to run or they get into a scuffle. Cops were on the way and knew exactly where they were. Witnesses heard kid crying for help, girlfriend on home heard him say someone was following him.
Tragic. That's my take. The guy was a disaster waiting to happen. If it had not been this kid, it would have been another, or someone else.
But what gave him the right to do this? If I had a neighbor that stalked the neighborhood looking for troublemakers with a concealed semiautomatic handgun, I'd do what I could to get them locked up.
