Neandertals were the first humans known to have buried their dead. Numerous burial pits have been discovered in the floors of caves and rock shelters, sometimes accompanied by stone tools or a few animal bones. At one Neandertal grave, in Shānīdār Cave in Iraq, large amounts of pollen were discovered, perhaps suggesting a burial with flowers. A Neandertal child skeleton from Teshik-Tash in the western foothills of the Himalayas lay in a pit surrounded by six pairs of mountain goat horns. At many other burial sites, Neandertal skeletons have their knees and arms drawn close to the chest in a fetal position, possibly but not necessarily indicating a ritual burial position.
To some authorities, these burials and grave items represent evidence that Neandertals practiced religious rituals, believed in the afterlife, and had the ability to think symbolically.
In otherwords they were conscious of there own mortality and eventual death and delusional enough to think they would survive in some after death experience.
Even the Neanderthals believed in a after life and knew they would die. There are sites found where they bury the dead with significant objects to help them pass into the after life.
Sites that are over 100,000 years old. So that shift in human conciouslness and knowledge of personal death had to have happened early on.
No other animal including lower apes, and we are just higher apes have a knowledge of their own personal mortality and death.
The human consciousness evolved about 50,000 years ago maybe as far back as 90,000 years ago, to be about to comprehend its own mortality, so it has had plenty of time to propagate thru out the world in writing, when writing was developed and develop a God mythos to cover the knowledge we will die, and then this major fear can be exploited by religion to make people do nearly anything.

The knowledge of himself being a mortal being created a complex that could only be over come with a delusion of eternal life thru some higher being. This is referred to in Genesis with the tree of knowledge which man accepted from Satan. During the early days of the development of the human mind the two sides of the brains were not fully in communication, so biblical prophets of the old days heard the voice of God talking to them.
