When the record industry switched over from manual sales reporting to "Soundscan" (register barcode scanning), the truth of what records were REALLY being sold was shocking to say the least.

I worked in a record store back then. The week BEFORE Soundscan, the Top 3 were Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, and crap like that.

The very next week, the top three were Garth Brooks, Metallica, and Nirvana. Just goes to show how much payola was involved before...


Te irony is that radio forgot to change the format of the 40 radio stations - stations whose playlists wer based on the Billboard Top 40 singles chart.


So these stations just automatically entered Teen Spirit and Enter Sandman to the playlists.

And given that the masses are stupid lemmings, what once was "alternative rock" became frat jock anthems once the popular radio station told them it was OK to listen...

It was fucking WEIRD to hear Enter Sandman blaring out of an overhyped KISS station, sandwiched between Madonna and New Kids, that I can tell you.

And now you know THE REST OF THE STORY.

The truth is that American cars were always not very high in quality. People brag about the 1940s-1960s as the glory years. They had styling and power but build quality was not very good.

The difference was that anyone with a full time job made a living wage and could buy a new car every 3-6 years. It was rare for a car to make 100K miles then. They were ready to be junked at 60-90K miles but it was okay because you just bought a new one.

Now people expect the cars to go 300K+ miles because not as many people in the population can afford a new car so frequently. The Japanese saw this holding on to cars for a long time trend back in the 1970s and made things durable.

The Germans actually made the cars worse in quality to require replacement and generate sales. Mercedes and BMW peaked in the 1970s. The 240D was perhaps the most well built and durable car in history. It's all been downhill from there.
