Note that Taiwan is much much much more civilized than China (Singapore even more so), and they are ethnically Chinese.

But yeah, China is disgusting.

I bet Chaoyang is as expensive as a N. American city to stay in too..

The only thing along these lines that's ever been shown to mean anything is the Myers-Briggs type indicator which can actually be fairly useful if not taken too dogmatically.

Pretty much, particularly as you can just see where the questioning is going and change your answer to warp the results with great ease.

But no one believes in tariffs anymore, so there's no way to turn it around without paying americans slave wages

http://american_almanac.tripod.com/carey95.htm

``Much is said of `the mission' of the people of these United States, and most of it is said by persons who appear to limit themselves to the consideration of the powers of the nation, and rarely to think of its duties.

``Two systems are before the world; the one looks to increasing the proportion of persons and of capital engaged in trade and transportation, and therefore to diminishing the proportion engaged in producing commodities with which to trade, with necessarily diminished return to the labour of all; while the other looks to increasing the proportion engaged in the work of production, and diminishing that engaged in trade and transportation, with increased return to all, giving to the labourer good wages, and to the owner of capital good profits. One looks to increasing the quantity of raw materials to be exported, and diminishing the inducements to the import of men, thus impoverishing both farmer and planter by throwing on them the burden of freight; while the other looks to increasing the import of men, and diminishing the export of raw materials, thereby enriching both planter and farmer by relieving them from the payment of freight. One looks to compelling the farmers and planters of the Union to continue their contributions for the support of the fleets and armies, the paupers, the nobles and the sovereigns of Europe; the other to enabling ourselves to apply the same means to the moral and intellectual improvement of the sovereigns of America. One looks to the continuance of that bastard freedom of trade which denies the principle of protection, yet doles it out as revenue duties; the other to extending the area of legitimate free trade by the establishment of perfect protection, followed by the annexation of individuals and communities, and ultimately by the abolition of custom-houses. One looks to exporting men to occupy desert tracts, the sovereignty of which is obtained by aid of diplomacy or war; the other to increasing the value of an immense extent of vacant land by importing men by millions for their occupation

Do you have something about wearing leather straps under your clothes?

I remember hearing some commentary somewhere that Stillman had intended that movie to be "An Officer and a Gentlemen" as two different persons.

 Leather straps???

'fraid I never saw O&AG

Fred, the Navy Attache cousin trolls the Spanish girls at a club telling them that Ted is an SM freak who wears narrow leather straps drawn tightly under his clothes so it makes him convulse weirdly when he's dancing.

One of the best movies I have ever seen. Whit Stillman is completely underrated.

Shiny New Kid said:Is it really a surprise that she's batshit insane? A quick perusal of any of her posts would tell you that.

Her delusions are very common among the psychotic, that she has knowledge that isn't available to others, that she has discovered things other's haven't, that this knowledge has led to a unseen cabal to persecute them, that those who disagree are lacking the intelligence or are mad themselves or are part of the persecuting cabal.

It's really quite sad and what you're doing in this thread and others where she's posting is not really that different from Victorians poking the mad with sticks at Bedlam

I don't think the Victorians still did that. It was more the Georgians that did that. (Victorians = 19th cent, Georgians = 18th century)

I feel bad for Linda, yet I can't help thinking she must have started seeing the red flags well before this catastrophe happened.

That would just totally suck, inviting some homeless grifter into your home to build you the front end of a relatively simple website, then find out after a couple of hours that they are batshit insane.

V8 said:So this is how it goes.

First, we all need clothes. Those who live in the world of appearances give us positive or negative feedback about these clothes, which creates a perception of Image, as determined by others, unconnected to the functional value of the clothes. If you buy into this, you are now hooked into the eternal treadmill of keeping up appearances for the sake of others.

Next, we need transport. Once again, cars as status symbols overtakes cars as a utility = lockin to the world of appearances as determined by others.

We need somewhere to live. Bigger is better according to others, so we acquire large spaces which need lots of furniture to fill. Then by virtue of its very existence, that large furnished space needs people in it - so we acquire friends and acquaintances to make sense of the furniture.

Then we have dinner parties to justify the large dining table and all our "friends" , leading to the next phase: food and wine acquisition and snobbery.

Also in this oversized house, we need multiple garages for our multiple cars, because some is good, so more must be better - as well as endless functional and decorative status symbols to conform to the expectations of others, and to create talking points for the social life our furniture has insisted upon.

But others are not working 80 hours to pay for this. You are.

And it was the moment that you conformed to others' expectations that you lost sight of your real needs.

Materialism SETS YOU UP. Merely by virtue of emotional investment in things, your psychology has been hijacked.

If you didn't have that huge house and excess furniture, you wouldn't have had to have all those parties, put in the new pool, have excessive food and alcohol on hand, and the latest model in the garage.

But you let yourself be duped by putting other people ahead of your own real interests and true needs.

And now you're bankrupt by your emotionalization of things, and voluntary abnegation of your true self in favour of a false self.

How's all that worked out for you, anyway?

It all can be condense to simply :tfb:
