If only that were the criterion. I used to drink with Roscoe Lee Brown and he let out bartender fill his Oscar ballot. He told me the voting didn't matter and the whole thing was rigged to the tits. I believed him and I still do. It isn't a matter of merit, it's anticipating the statement the upper levels of the Academy want to make for the year.
I guess. I don't know very much about it beyond the director's acceptance speech at the globes, saying it was his father's vision and blah blah. But you can see all the mainstream stars in it so he loses a lot of that credibility right there.
I tried. The Artist is just too awful to watch. I don't know what the fuck everyone's talking about. Christ. The score is enough to make me want to punch a q-tip into my brain. Fuck that movie. It will get no wagers from me and I hope it tanks at the Oscars.
Best director. Oh boy. You might be tempted to put a little on Malick, but I think everyone knows he's got like 3 features set up back to back coming up real soon and Tree of Life wasn't so great so if they wanted to just give him one, there's going to be more opportunity later.
This is tricky. It might seem obvious for The Artist but I think that since Clooney's directorial effort was so terrible and everyone loves him so much that they might toss it to him for The Descendants. He really carried the whole movie, such as it was.
Is the nominee from The Help a Big Fat Black Mammy? I could live 10 lifetimes and there's nothing that would compel me to watch that movie. And they have TWO nominations out of 5. Might be worth betting on The Artist girl. I'll have to watch that tonight.
